The Krasno Moore Project led by guitarist Eric Krasno and drummer Stanton Moore played Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on Friday during a swing through the Northeast. Trumpeter/vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, percussionist Pedrito Martínez, saxophonist Stuart Bogie and trumpeter Jordan McLean each made guest appearances over the course of the evening.
The trio consisting of Eric Krasno, Stanton Moore and keyboardist Eric Finland kicked off their first of two sets at Brooklyn Bowl with Kraz’s “76.” Next up were covers of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” and Sharon Jones’ “Nobody’s Baby,” the songs that open the Krasno Moore Project’s debut album, Book Of Queens, a nine-track effort released earlier this year filled with reimagined versions of tunes by iconic female musicians.

Jennifer Hartswick was the trio’s first guest on Friday and came out following “Nobody’s Baby.” The longtime Trey Anastasio Band member fronted the Krasno Moore Project on the Peggy Lee-popularized “Fever” and delivered a tasty trumpet solo within the song also featured on Book Of Queens. Hartswick then provided backing vocals and added trumpet to the Krasno original “Leave Me Alone.”
Pedrito Martinez swapped in for Hartswick to join Krasno Moore Project for Book Of Queens standout “Carried Away,” an instrumental version of H.E.R.’s I Used To Know Her: Part 2 opener “Carried Away.” The acclaimed percussionist also provided latin flair to a fierce take on The Allman Brothers Band classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” Krasno, Moore and Finland brought out Bogie, McLean and Hartswick to add horns to the set-closing “For Granted,” a song Eric wrote for Soulive.
The Krasno Moore Project went it alone to get their second set cooking on Friday night. “Pot Licker” from Moore’s organ trio days was selected as the opener. Next up was a medley combining portions of Meters, Soulive and Galactic songs. The “Soulactic Meters Medley” gave way to a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire” featuring Kraz on lead vocals and an intense guitar solo that built to a strong peak. It was then back to Book Of Queens for a slow and groovy take on Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” to end the guest-less portion of the frame
All four special guests — Jennifer Hartswick, Pedrito Martinez, Stuart Bogie and Jordan McLean — returned for the rest of the second set and the encore. First, Hartswick belted out “Rock Steady” to complete a double dose of Aretha Franklin classics. The seven musicians then delivered a particularly soulful version of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.” The Moore-penned instrumental “Sprung Monkey” capped Friday’s second set. For the encore, the Krasno Moore Project and guests put an inventive spin on The Beatles’ “Get Back” sans vocals.
