Kitchen Dwellers provided fans with an early Christmas present by releasing The Katabatic EP via No Coincidence Records today with no advance notice. The three-song collection includes a pair of tracks recorded with Lettuce trumpeter Eric ‘Benny’ Bloom.
The Katabatic EP was captured in late November 2021 during sessions held at Denver’s Mighty Fine Studios and in their hometown of Bozeman, Montana at Peach Street Studios. Kitchen Dwellers self-produced the EP, which was mixed by Stephen Guegan and Max Davies and mastered by Stephan Gueguen. The band consists of Davies on acoustic guitar along with mandolinist Shawn Swain, banjoist Torrin Daniels and Joe Funk on upright bass.
Kitchen Dwellers took inspiration for their first release since the band’s 2024 full-length studio album, Seven Devils, from their home state of Montana. The Katabatic EP contains instrumentals “Katabatic” and “Mimas & Ida,” featuring Bloom, as well as “Madison,” a song that tells the tale of a perplexed fisherman whose experience mirrors the erratic rhythms of love. Both instrumentals have been played live by the quartet since the EP was recorded.
Max Davies shared the following in regards to The Katabatic EP:
“We are excited to share The Katabatic EP. These songs are a snapshot of late November 2021. The four of us went into the studio just after Thanksgiving to lay down some tracks. We had recorded Wise River earlier that year and had yet to begin work on Seven Devils, but we had some ideas we wanted to capture. The three-song EP covers a lot of ground in a short sprint.
“The source of the inspiration for these songs can be found in Montana where we were spending some downtime before the holidays. There’s a juxtaposition in these songs, just like the weather and geography in Montana, or the styles of the four friends who created this small collection of music.”
