King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard brought their current North American tour to Portland, Oregon last night. The Australian rockers worked the live debut of new song “Magma” into the setlist for Tuesday’s concert at Roseland Theater.
“Magma” is featured on King Gizz’s Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava, a new studio album due out this Friday. The seven-track LP is the first of three new albums set for release this month via the group’s KGLW label. Laminated Denim follows next Wednesday, October 12 with Changes arriving on October 28.
“This song’s called ‘Magma,'” frontman Stu Mackenzie told the crowd before the penultimate song of the night in Portland. The dynamic number spanned nearly nine minutes and was propelled with a swing feel by drummer Michael Cavanagh. Mackenzie and Joey Walker exchanged solos and joined forces for dual guitar leads at various points of the song. King Gizz eventually built “Magma” to a ferocious climax.

King Gizz’s Roseland Theater show rolled on with Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava lead single “Ice V.” Next came the aforementioned “Blame It On The Weather” and “The Garden Goblin,” which were split by “Hot Water.” The evening’s last Omnium Gatherum song gave way to a performance of “Iron Lung” on the day the Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms And Lava single was released. From there, the Australian rockers unveiled “Magma” before ending the show with a “Rattlesnake” featuring a microtonal medley that included teases of “Honey,” “O.N.E.,” “Billabong Valley” and more.
The tour continues tonight in Vancouver.
