Kid Rock Guests With Phish In Las Vegas In 2000

On this date in the year 2000 Phish played the first of two memorable shows at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. While the evening is best remembered as the night Kid Rock sat-in with Phish, there were a handful of other highlights as well.

The Vegas run began a series of shows that would end the first phase of Phish’s career. Following a pair of gigs at Shoreline the next weekend, the quartet would commence an indefinite hiatus that wound up lasting until December 31, 2002. Phish came out of the gates with “Carini” and after a performance of “Rift” they worked in two very different covers – “Frankenstein” and “Mellow Mood.” Next up was “Wilson” which featured a heavy metal jam and then the night’s first major bust out as “Spock’s Brain” returned to the fold for the first time in 391 shows.

Another bust out began the second set in the form of “Dinner & A Movie.” The Junta rarity had been on the shelf since March 1, 1997 – a span of 242 shows. Later came the last “Fluffhead” Phish would play until they famously opened the Hampton ’09 run with the tune on March 6, 2009. Kid Rock came out towards the end of the set to lead the quartet on covers of “Walk This Way,” “Rapper’s Delight” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.” The AC/DC cover was the biggest bust out on a night filled with them as it was last performed on April 20, 1989 – a span of 1,122 shows. Phish was then joined by Kid Rock for an encore featuring Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band.” Depending who you ask Kid Rock’s sit-in was either one of the worst or best guest spots in Phish history.

Here’s fan-shot footage of the entire show though unfortunately the audio is out of sync with the video:

Set 1: Carini, Rift, Frankenstein, Mellow Mood, Wilson [1] > Spock's Brain > Bathtub Gin > Character Zero

Set 2: Dinner and a Movie, The Moma Dance > Also Sprach Zarathustra > Fluffhead > Meatstick > Walk This Way [2], Rapper's Delight [3], You Shook Me All Night Long [4]

Encore: We're an American Band [5]

Wilson included a heavy metal jam, complete with Trey waving his guitar in the air. Kid Rock provided guest vocals from Walk This Way through the encore. Walk This Way and Rapper’s Delight (with funny stage antics from Fish, who danced on his knees like Kid’s sidekick Joe C.) were Phish debuts. You Shook Me (All Night Long) was played in its entirety by Phish for the first time, although it had been jammed on other occasions. Walk This Way was also teased during 2001. Spock’s Brain (first since June 24, 1995, or 393 shows), Dinner and a Movie (first since March 1, 1997, or 244 shows), and American Band (first since November 16, 1996, or 273 shows) returned after long absences. The Carini opener was preceded by a Wilson tease and saw Trey have several problems with his guitar.
