Kendrick Lamar shared new single “The Heart Part 5” via a trippy video in which his face transforms into other famous Black men. “The Heart Part 5” is featured on Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, an album set for release this Friday, May 13.
Co-directed by Kendrick Lamar and Dave Free, the five-minute visual finds the hip-hop star deepfaking OJ Simpson, Kanye West, actors Jussie Smollett and Will Smith as well as the late NBA star Kobe Bryant and late rapper Nipsey Hussle. Lamar seems to sample Marvin Gaye’s 1976 gem “I Want You” within “The Heart Part 5.”
“I am. All of us,” reads a quote at the start of the video attributed to Oklama. Lamar then raps from the perspective of the celebrities he emulates including lyrics about bipolar disorder when he appears as Kanye West and discusses being murdered as Nipsey Hussle. The Deep Fake technology is credited to DEEP VOODOO while Kendrick offers special thanks to South Park co-founders Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers marks the first Kendrick Lamar album since 2017’s Damn.
