Karina Rykman Joins Gaslight Anthem For Billie Eilish & Nirvana Covers + More In Boston

Karina Rykman joined collaborators The Gaslight Anthem during the latter’s concert at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston on Sunday. Rykman sat-in with the band for their cover of Billie Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes” and more.

Karina contributed to The Gaslight Anthem’s studio rendition of “Ocean Eyes,” which appears on the band’s 2024 EP History Books – Short Stories, a companion to their 2023 LP, History Books. Rykman joined Gaslight for the song toward the end of their set.

“We’re going to bring out a very good friend of the band,” frontman Brian Fallon said. “You know her as singing on one of our songs on the new EP. Karina Rykman welcome to the stage… two basses for the price of one.”

Karina and Brian then teamed to sing Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes” off Billie’s 2016 debut EP, Don’t Smile at Me. Watch the performance below:

Rykman stuck around for Gaslight Anthem’s “Mae” — off the band’s 2012 album Handwritten — as well as a pair of tunes off the New Jersey outfit’s 2009 record The ‘59 Sound including “Great Expectations” and the title track.

The Gaslight Anthem opened the concert with the title track to their 2010 album American Slang. Additional favorites performed included History Books’ “Positive Charge” and The ‘59 Sound’s “Here’s Looking at You, Kid.” To close the concert, Rykman stayed on for a cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” which also saw The Gaslight Anthem welcoming opener Pinkshift.
