The 2024 Stagecoach lineup drew attention to the DJ Backwoods Barbie set that was scheduled for Diplo’s Honkytonk stage last Saturday night. With little information available about DJ Backwoods Barbie, speculation began to grow, as several media outlets proposed that the set was really going to be Beyoncé making a surprise appearance to perform songs of her new Cowboy Carter album.

The thousands of fans that flocked to DJ Backwoods Barbie’s set soon learned that Beyoncé would not be taking the Honkytonk stage at Stagecoach when Karina Rykman and Katie Alexander came out for the set. Dressed in matching pink cowgirl outfits, the pair emerged as Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” played over the PA.

Rykman called the experience, “one of the more insane things I’ve ever gotten myself wrapped up in.” Explaining her side of the wild ride leading up to Stagecoach, the bassist detailed how she became part of the festival, writing:

“Alright! Here’s the explanation as to why last week was one of the more insane things I’ve ever gotten myself wrapped up in…

“Hi! I have a friend named Katie who got booked to DJ at Stagecoach under the name DJ BACKWOODS BARBIE. She called me a few weeks ago asking me to tag team the set with her. I said yes, obviously – sounds like a ridiculous good time and something I’d never do otherwise. I fly to LA last week to start putting the set together with her, and next thing you know there are all these crazy internet rumors going around that Backwoods Barbie is actually going to be a Beyoncé secret set.

“And I’m not just talking TikTok and Twitter rumors (though those are great and you should do a deep dive) but literally Billboard, Time Magazine, Forbes, Uproxx, TMZ… it was a helluva week. Google it. Backwoods Barbie even posted an IG story saying that we are NOT Beyoncé. But that did nothing – the story was so much bigger than us at that point.

“Of course, we had to walk on to ‘Single Ladies.’ We get up on stage and thousands of people are at our set expecting Beyoncé… and then it’s just me and Katie in pink daisy dukes DJing. Unfuckingbelievable stuff. So surreal. Truth is stranger than fiction…”

Hopefully, Rykman’s explanation clears up any lingering animosity among disappointed members of the Beyhive.
