Justin Vernon: Bon Iver & Beyond Spotify Playlist

Last weekend, Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon made a guest appearance with Dead & Company, sitting-in on three songs with the band featuring members of the Grateful Dead at Alpine Valley in East Troy, Wisconsin. Next weekend, Vernon will host the fourth installment of the Eaux Claires music festival, which he curates with The National’s Aaron Dessner, in his native Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

This weekend, specifically today, Saturay Stream presents a Spotify Playlist that collects recordings featuring Vernon’s many other collaborations. The set showcases Vernon’s signature high-pitched vocals as well as his more natural vocal tones throughout the eclectic set. A number of the recordings were made at Vernon’s April Base recording facility near Eau Claire.

One of Vernon’s early bands was the Eau Claire-based DeYarmond Edison that featured future Megafaun members Brad Cook and Phil Cook. The Cook brothers make a few appearances on the playlist, including alongside Bruce Hornsby on a cover of the Dead’s “Black Muddy River,” which Vernon led a rendition of at Alpine. Another set of siblings, Dessner and his twin Bryce Dessner also show up at various points in the collection.

Outside of Bon Iver, Vernon has also been part of such groups as Volcano Choir, The Shouting Matches and Gayngs, each of which appears on the playlist. Other collaborations Vernon’s been part of include recordings with The Flaming Lips, James Blake, Ani DiFranco, Amy Ray, Colin Stetson, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Mouse On Mars, Poliça and several others, all of which can be streamed below:
