Justin Vernon & Aaron Dessner Announce Big Red Machine Debut Album

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner will issue the self-titled debut Big Red Machine album on August 31 via PEOPLE/Jagjaguwar. Four songs are currently available from the record which features many guest contributors.

Big Red Machine performed last weekend at Vernon and Dessner’s Eaux Claires music festival in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The project’s name comes from an instrumental song Vernon and Dessner wrote and recorded, prior to meeting in person, for the 2009 Red Hot Organization charity album Dark Was The Night.

The songs on Big Red Machine grew from improvised sets held in 2017 at events such as Eaux Claires, Haven and Sounds From A Safe Harbor. The 10-song debut album was co-produced by Vernon and Dessner with Brad Cook and mostly recorded at Dessner’s Hudson Valley, New York studio Long Pond. Similar to the evolving lineups of past Big Red Machine performances, each track on the record includes several contributions from members of the PEOPLE collective “of international artists who have come together to create and share their work freely, with each other and everyone” (view the album credits and lyrics here).

“I don’t think the record would exist without the community that came together to make it,” said Dessner. “We took the music to a certain point, and then we reached out and sent it far and wide, inviting friends to contribute any and all ideas. We’ve viewed the record and the process from a community standpoint. We’re incredibly excited about it, as excited as we would be for any album we might make in another situation that’s more conventional. But this feels like something new — the process felt different and the outcome felt different.”

The newly established PEOPLE digital streaming platform will issue Big Red Machine, which will also be available via other streaming services and physical formats. Stream four singles from the upcoming release below:
