Julian Lage & Martin Fierro Guest With Steve Kimock Band On This Date In 2003
Guitarist Steve Kimock brought the Steve Kimock Band to the historic Mystic Theater in Petaluma, California on this date in 2003. Kimock and his quartet were joined by guitarist Julian Lage and saxophonist Martin Fierro both individually and collectively at various points of the evening. A crispy recording is available and is this week’s Full Show Friday selection.
Julian Lage was just 15-years-old at the time yet held his own with the SKB. The concert started out with an improvised duet between Kimock and Lage. Drummer Rodney Holmes, guitarist Mitch Stein and bassist Arne Livingston were Steve’s band at the time and the SKB followed the duet by teaming with Julian on “La Petite Groove Part 1” and “Ice Cream.” The latter spanned over 20 minutes and was filled with outstanding guitar work.
Fierro made his initial appearance of the concert at the end of the first set for “Thing One” and “Hillbillies on PCP.” When the Steve Kimock Band emerged for the second set they were joined by both Martin and Julian for a pair of songs from Fierro and Kimock’s Zero days: “Anorexia” and “Sun Sun Sun.” Fierro stuck around for the rest of the frame as well as the encore. The interplay between Steve and Martin was especially divine on a gorgeous sequence of “Cole’s Law” > “Tangled Hangers.” An adventurous “Tongue ‘N’ Groove” brought the second set to a close, while a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” served as encore.
