Renowned musician Joni Mitchell confirmed her first ticketed concert since 2000 will take place in June 2023 at The Gorge in Washington state. Brandi Carlile will join the 78-year-old Mitchell for the Joni Jam performance that is part of the two-day Echoes Through The Canyon event at the majestic outdoor venue.
Mitchell made a triumphant return to the live stage by making a surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. Carlile helped orchestrate the Newport Folk Joni Jam that saw participating guests including Wynonna Judd, Blake Mills, Taylor Goldsmith, Marcus Mumford, Lucius’ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, and others.
The “Joni Jam” set was inspired by a series of gatherings held at Mitchell’s Los Angeles home in the years before the pandemic began with such illustrious guests as Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Hozier, Mavis Staples and Harry Styles.
The Newport performance – during which Mitchell played guitar on “Just Like This Train” – and now the pending performance at the Gorge, come in the wake of Mitchell’s brain aneurysm that left her hospitalized in 2015. While it remains to be revealed who will participate in the Joni Jam at The Gorge next year, whoever comes out onstage will join an already impressive roster of musicians who have performed with Joni Mitchell.
In 1998, Mitchell shared the stage at The Gorge with a pair of fellow legendary musicians. Mitchell was on tour supporting Bob Dylan on a bill that also included Van Morrison. On May 16, 1998, the three folk rock icons brought the tour to Washington for the first of two shows at The Gorge. Fans in attendance at the scenic amphitheater were treated to a special collaboration as Mitchell and Morrison joined Dylan onstage during his set.
With no introduction, Mitchell and Morrison emerged at the start of “I Shall Be Released,” and traded verses on the poignant Dylan classic. Captured 24 years ago on VHS tape, footage of the summit of folk rock icons at The Gorge can be viewed in the albeit somewhat grainy video of Dylan’s full set below:
