Multi-talented singer-songwriter Jonathan Wilson today released a new solo album entitled Eat The Worm. The multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer who currently plays guitar in Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters’ band, included the song “B.F.F.” on the new album and its lyrics take aim at fellow singer-songwriter, Dead & Company guitarist John Mayer, as well as “other Jerry [Garcia] imposters.”
One of 12 songs Eat The Worm, “B.F.F.” was recorded and produced by Wilson at his Fivestarstudios in the Topanga Canyon area of Los Angeles. Wilson played piano, harpsichord, guitar, drums and percussion on the track. The recording also features Jake Blanton on bass, Drew Erickson on keyboards, Grant Milliken on vibraphone, Miwi La Lupa on bass trumpet and a strings section made up of Andrew Bulbrook, Paul Cartwright, Christine Kim, Wynton Grant and Rita Andrade.
Singing over a breezy, airy soundscape, Wilson takes aim at Mayer and “other Jerry imposters” with the lyrics:
So bring me the head of John Mayer
And all of the other Jerry imposters
In their online designer tie-dye
Sure I’ll PayPal $160
For the nonexistent counterculture hoodie
Let’s turn this whole fucking fake shakedown into a real fish fry
Press materials for Eat The Worm described Wilson’s lyrical approach and addressed a different “B.F.F.” verse:
“The lyrics were another area where Wilson stuck with his new, instinctive approach, the songs are filled with vivid surreal scenes with a crazy cast of characters. We see him confronting his ego, as well as skewering some of the bullshit aspects of the music industry.
“In ‘B.F.F.,’ he sings about an earlier version of himself: ‘Yes I was paying to play / Ego was eating me alive / I was living a bald-faced lie / But I was making epic scenes / Doing interviews in all the magazines / And making weekend trips to the bonafide wild-eyed countryside.’”
Eat The Worm is out now. Listen to “B.F.F.” below:
