Stephen Colbert sent his love to John Prine, who has been hospitalized with the coronavirus COVID-19, and shared the pair’s 2016 performance of the latter’s “That’s The Way That The World Goes Round.” Colbert and Prine dueted on the song from John’s 1978 album Bruised Orange as a web exclusive for The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
The Prine Family shared a note on Monday that revealed the acclaimed singer-songwriter was hospitalized on Thursday, March 26 “after a sudden onset of COVID-19 symptoms.” John Prine was intubated a few days later and the statement noted his condition as critical. Fiona Prine, John’s wife, tweeted a pair of updates yesterday noting her husband was stable but clarified, “That is not the same as improving. There is no cure for Covid-19. He needs our prayers and love – as do the thousands of others who are critically ill.”

Colbert and Prine’s performance of “That’s The Way That The World Goes Round” came when John was at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City appearing as the musical guest on The Late Show in 2016. While John’s rendition of “I’m Telling You” from that year’s For Better, Or Worse aired on television, Prine also took up Stephen on an offer to duet. Watch Stephen Colbert send a message of love to John, Fiona and everyone touched by the virus before sharing “one of the happiest moments I’ve had on my show”:
