Grateful Dead lyricist and political activist John Perry Barlow died on February 7. A tribute to Barlow will be held at The Fillmore in San Francisco this Sunday, April 8. The event dubbed “Barlow’s Graduation From Meatspace” will be webcast for free.
“Barlow’s Graduation From Meatspace” follows in a series of “BarlowFrenzy” events JPB hosted over the years. John Perry Barlow described the events as such:
“One never knows what alchemy any particular moment will provide a BarlowFrenzy. As you have seen, the method by which I convene these things leaves almost everything to chance and magic. But since magic will often deliver for those who have faith, I’m rarely disappointed. Sometimes, however, the magic kicks in hard. A gathering assembles itself is already connected with The Third Rail of the Universe. Then no one dances but everyone is danced, no one seeks, but everyone finds, none are called, but all are chosen.”
The celebration of the Electronic Frontier Foundation founder and man who co-wrote so many iconic Grateful Dead songs comes as part of a weekend of events honoring John Perry Barlow in San Francisco. On Saturday, the Internet Archive will host a symposium featuring such speakers as Edward Snowden, Cindy Cohen, Cory Doctorow, Mitch Kapor and John Gilmore. Then, on Sunday, ahead of the event at The Fillmore, Golden Gate Park will host a “Picnic & Frolic” in tribute to Barlow. Sunday’s Picnic & Frolic will take place in the lawns surrounding the Conservatory Of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. Head to JohnPerryBarlow.net for more information about each of the events.
