Four years ago today, My Morning Jacket held the second of two shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. The guest-filled show featured John Oates, Trombone Shorty and members of Orleans Avenue and Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses. For Throwback Thursday, here’s a look back at Jim James and Co.’s eventful night on the rocks on August 4, 2012.
“At Dawn” opened the second night at Red Rocks followed by staples such as “X-Mas Curtain,” “It Beats 4 U,” “The Bear” and “Golden” before welcoming Bridwell out mid-set to add vocals to a cover of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity.” The rest of the main set included takes on “Mahgeetah,” “Dondante,” a cover of The Band’s “It Makes No Difference” and the set closing “Phone Went West.”
The encore that evening began with James offering solo acoustic takes on “Bermuda Highway” and “I Will Be There When You Die.” The full band then joined for performance of the rarity “Where to Begin” and cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Oh! Sweet Nuthin’” ahead of the emergence of John Oates and Trombone Shorty who brought along member of his band Orleans Avenue. The guests helped out on a cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up,” and Shorty and his mates stuck around for the subsequent “Dancefloors.” MMJ then closed out the show with their familiar anthem “One Big Holiday.” Below are video highlights from four years ago at Red Rocks.
