Watch John Mayer Play Song Request Game On Fan’s Sign In Seattle
“This is one of the most psychologically manipulative and brilliant sign ideas I’ve ever seen in my life.”

A common occurrence at shows on John Mayer’s current solo tour has been for the guitarist to play song requests written on signs held up by fans and that trend continued Tuesday night at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena. What was uncommon about last evening’s request was that it required Mayer to choose the song from one of three hidden possibilities.
Mayer pointed out a fan, (Instagram user @trubie) holding a sign reading “Surprise Song Request” with cards indicating three options – “A,” “B” and “C.”

“This is one of the most psychologically manipulative and brilliant sign ideas I’ve ever seen in my life,” Mayer said. “I’ll tell you what: this sign is so clever I will play the song that I choose, whether I know it or not. It is too good an idea. You win on cleverness alone … Let’s do this Price Is Right style – I’m gonna go ‘B’ Bob, I’m gonna go ‘B’ Bob. I say ‘B.’ It says ‘Love Is A Verb,’ let’s do it.”
The request was then honored as Mayer played “Love Is A Verb” for the first time on the current solo tour. A tour debut was bound to happen as the fan revealed option “A” was “Fool To Love You,” and option “C” was the rarity “Wildfire,” both of which have not been played yet on the tour.
