Guitarist John Mayer premiered a never-before-heard song yesterday on his SiriusXM Channel Life With John Mayer. Mayer spun the demo for “Please Be You,” which he wrote and recorded back in 2014.
“Please Be You” was prepped during the sessions for Mayer’s 2017 album, The Search For Everything. The guitarist explained he might start playing the song live now that it’s been shared publicly.

While John Mayer really likes “Please Be You,” he stopped work on the song due to the similarlity of one melody line of the tune to Bob Dylan’s “If Not For You.” George Harrison released a version of “If Not For You” on his iconic 1970 triple album All Things Must Pass. “I didn’t mean to copy those notes, but I was told that those notes are pretty close,” Mayer explained before spinning the song. “So I rewrote the notes for this verse and it was no good. And I just gave up on it and I never thought about it again because I’d written some other songs for the album.”
The guitarist penned the song about waiting for a particular person to contact him. “I think we’ve all been there before when we get a text or an email or the phone rings and we go ‘please be you, please be you, please be you.” Stream John Mayer’s “Please Be You” below:
