John Mayer Posts Beautiful Tribute To Jerry Garcia

Tonight, guitarist John Mayer will take the stage at Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts with Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti for the first Dead & Company show of 2018. Mayer continued what has become a tradition last night by posting a poignant note in honor of Jerry Garcia on his social feeds.

“The night before a new Dead&Co tour is always deeply felt,” Mayer began. “I wish I was going to a Grateful Dead concert tomorrow. I wish I was dancing with my friends while we listened to Jerry and the band play. But it’s the honor of a lifetime to convert my love for this music into the further telling of this beautiful, timeless story with some of its brilliant authors,” the guitarist continued.

“I’m like anyone else who was ever moved by this music, who was discovered by it, and not the other way around,” Mayer noted. “My love for the Grateful Dead is immense, but not extraordinary. I am in that crowd. Just represented from the stage. And I think of Jerry Garcia and his intentions with every song we play. I’m only there so that on my best of nights, you might get to him,” he concluded. The guitarist went on to share lyrics from “Terrapin Station.”

John Mayer wrote a similar post in November ahead of the six-piece’s fall tour in which he said, “I play in constant emotional, psychological and musical deference to Jerry Garcia.” Dead & Company will play a total of 24 shows this tour between this evening’s performance and a concert at Boulder’s Folsom Field on July 14.
