This Saturday and Sunday The Roots will bring their the Roots Picnic festival to New York City for the first time following nine successful installments in Philadelphia. The first night will conclude with a set combining the talents of The Roots with D’Angelo and John Mayer, while the second night which has been dubbed “A Love Letter To New York” will find The Roots backing Wu-Tang Clan, David Byrne and Nile Rodgers. Other acts on the bill include X Ambassadors, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Swizz Beaths, Kevin Gates, Jeremih, Stretch & Bobbito, Deerhoof and EPMD.

John Mayer and The Roots are no strangers to each other. Not only did Roots drummer Questlove famously appear in an episode of Chappelle’s Show with the guitarist, but The Roots backed Mayer for four songs at the Philly 4th Of July Jam in 2013. The Roots were fronted by John Mayer on the guitarist’s “Something Like Olivia,” “Queen Of California” and “Waiting On The World To Change.” Mayer also contributed to a cover of Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself” featuring The Roots.
