John Mayer Honors Glen Campbell In Nashville

By Andy Kahn Aug 9, 2017 7:36 am PDT

Last night John Mayer brought his The Search For Everything Tour to Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The Music City audience saw Mayer pay tribute to country music legend Glen Campbell, who passed away yesterday at the age of 81.

Mayer began his performance in typical tour fashion with his full band performing several songs from his latest solo album The Search For Everything. He then moved to the solo acoustic portion of the show performing favorites “In Your Atmosphere,” “Dreaming With A Broken Heart/ Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” and Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin.’”

“I’m going to play this song with more love than precision,” Mayer told the audience in Nashville. “I’m going to play it because it’s my favorite song in the world. It was performed by Glen Campbell who sadly passed away today and whether I play it right or wrong I’d rather have played it.”

Mayer then launched into an acoustic cover of “Gentle On My Mind,” a 1967 hit for Campbell penned by John Hartford. The performance was captured by Kelly Sutton, watch the audience-shot footage below:
