John Mayer Debuts Ode To ‘Free Bird Guy’ In Philadelphia

John Mayer penned and unveiled an ode to “Free Bird Guy” as part of his tour stop at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on Monday night. Mayer’s Jimmy Buffett-esque number about fans who request the classic from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1973 debut album, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd) came within his first of two sets in Philadelphia.

“Every show has got the Free Bird guy and I don’t know why he screams,” Mayer sang. “‘Cause ‘Free Bird’ is a very old song and I still hear it in my dreams.” The lyrics also included the refrain of, “‘Free Bird’ guy, ‘Free Bird’ guy, everybody needs one” and “‘Free Bird’ guy, ‘Free Bird’ guy, everybody knows one.” John Mayer concluded the song with, “He gets a seat and he clears his throat, takes out the note he wrote and he yells it. And all it says is, ‘Hey guy, don’t forget to yell ‘Free Bird’ real loud in between the songs. Maybe he’ll hear you, maybe he’ll make a song of his own.”

Last night’s third show of John Mayer’s summer tour also included the run’s first versions of “Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey” and “Stop The Train.” As with previous concerts on the tour, the second set started with a series of acoustic songs. On Monday, the guitarist went with “Emoji Of A Wave,” “In Your Atmosphere” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.”
