Watch John Mayer Appear On 1st Post-Strike ‘Fallon’

Not only did John Mayer swing by Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen last night, he also visited 30 Rock for a guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Mayer sat for an interview with host Jimmy Fallon on the first new The Tonight Show since the end of the writers’ strike and performed a solo acoustic “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does.”

John Mayer is in the middle of a solo acoustic tour that brings him to New York City’s Madison Square Garden tonight and tomorrow. The interview segment began with Mayer showing off his comedy writing skills via a “Crypto Bismol” bit he pitched to Fallon. “I never heard another thing about it until you fully produced the commercial,” Mayer recalled before the parody was aired again.

The guitarist also looked back at the night Questlove filled in at Madison Square Garden for Mayer’s drummer at the time, Steve Ferrone, who tested positive for COVID-19. “He was coming to the gig anyway, and somewhere along the line of him coming to the show he got offered to play like six songs,” John Mayer said of the February 2022 Sob Rock tour concert. “It was the most exhilarating night of my life,” remembered the drummer for Fallon house band The Roots.

John Mayer went on to discuss the format of his solo shows. “Arenas, solo and it works,” Mayer explained. “It’s an opportunity for me to play some of these songs from my career and tell stories around them. Read signs with requests on them and they try to stump me and see if I remember an old song. It’s just very open ended.”

Mayer chose “Shouldn’t Matter But It Does” off his 2021 LP, Sob Rock, for his musical performance. Jimmy Fallon called the song his favorite from Sob Rock. See John Mayer’s performance and interview from last night’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon below:
