John Mayer Covers 2Pac & Prince In Anaheim

Guitarist John Mayer continued The Search For Everything Tour at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Tuesday night. Mayer and his band had fun vamping on a 2Pac classic as part of their set ahead of one of John’s originals and later guitarist David Ryan Harris led a Prince cover.

The current leg of John Mayer’s tour has kept the same format as earlier legs. Mayer and his full band take the stage to start each show with a segment heavy on tunes from The Search For Everything. Last night’s performance saw Mayer open with “Helpless” off the recent LP and then dive back to 2003 for “Clarity” off Heavier Things. From there, The guitarist and his ensemble were all smiles for a brief jam on 2Pac’s “California Love.” Mayer sang a few lines before launching into “Moving On And Getting Over.”

John Mayer’s opening, electric segment was followed by an acoustic set that included “Emoji Of A Wave” and “Stop This Train” as well as a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.” Tuesday’s John Mayer Trio portion of the night featured “Who Do You Think I Was” and “Vultures” plus a take on the Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Wait Until Tomorrow.” Later in the night, as part of the “Full Band Reprise” portion of the show, David Ryan Harris stepped into the spotlight to sing Prince’s Purple Rain gem “The Beautiful Ones.” Mayer’s set concluded with “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” and “Why Georgia,” while a three-song encore featured “In The Blood,” “Gravity” and “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me.”
