Joe Russo’s Almost Dead wrapped up their three-night run at Westville Music Bowl in New Haven Connecticut on Sunday. The Grateful Dead tribute act welcomed frequent collaborator Stuart Bogie on saxophone and flute for the entire show.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead —- guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger, drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento and bassist Dave Dreiwitz —- got the show going with an atmospheric beginning to “Eyes Of The World” with Bogie’s sax adding to the vibey intro. Hamilton then led the band through the usually well-jammed number with the New Haven rendition stretching to over 20 minutes. The band would touch on a brief tease of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Breakdown” before Metzger sang lead on “Estimated Prophet.”

A “Friend Of The Devil” jam emerged from “Estimated,” which featured some tasty flute touches from Bogie. The “FOTD” jam then dropped nicely into “Cassidy,” with Russo’s steady shuffle giving way to “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.” Hamilton then led the band on “Candyman” which headed into “The Eleven.” Next, JRAD returned to “Slipknot,” the band delivered “Help On The Way” and “Slipknot” on Friday and this time JRAD completed the classic trifecta with “Franklin’s Tower” to close out the first frame.

Another classic Dead juxtaposition in “Scarlet Begonias” and “Fire On The Mountain” kicked off the second set. A speedy “Scarlet” reprise led the band into a spirited “Beat It On Down The Line.” JRAD then cooled things off a bit with the poignant “He’s Gone” which led into a “Playing In The Band” excursion. Next, Russo pounded on the toms signaling “Samson and Delilah.” The song bounced along at a good clip with Metzger leading the way on vocals. JRAD brought the song to a crescendo punctuated by Russo’s tom fills to close out the second set. Finally, the band fittingly closed out their first run of 2021 with their stellar rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born To Run” for the encore.
