One day after celebrating their 10th anniversary with a surprise sit-in by Bob Weir at Brooklyn Bowl, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead started a three-show run at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester New York on Friday night. Each set saw the band debut a new song as they covered the Dave Dudley-popularized “Six Days On The Road” and the Grateful Dead’s late-career original “Days Between.”
The first premiere to land on Friday’s setlist came as the second song of the first set, which opened with guitarist Tom Hamilton leading the band (with some missed lyrics) through a lively “Scarlet Begonias” opener. Next came the debut of “Six Days On The Road,” a classic country tune written by Earl Green and Carl Montgomery. Guitarist Scott Metzger sang lead on the often-covered truck-driving song.
Watch the “Six Days On The Road” debut below, starting around the 13-minute mark:
JRAD waited until the second set’s final song for the night’s second debut. Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter’s reflective “Days Between” was first played by the Grateful Dead in 1993 and made 41 of the band’s setlists through a final performance in 1995. Hamilton sang lead on the poignant ballad as it appeared in a JRAD setlist for the first time.
The “Days” debut preceded the encore which began with “Not Fade Away.” The finale concluded with the band’s fifth attempt at Spacehog’s “In the Meantime.”
Earlier in the evening, set one highlights included a “Black Peter” with elements of “Dark Star” segueing into “The Eleven” that hinted at Donovan’s “There Is A Mountain” and “Fire On The Mountain.” Set two’s notable moments included a lengthy “Cats Under The Stars” that incorporated teases of Primus’ “My Name Is Mud,” “China Cat Sunflower,” “One More Saturday Night” and more “Fire On The Mountain”
