Jim James Honors Leonard Cohen At Tour Opener

By Andy Kahn Nov 16, 2016 2:46 pm PST

Last night My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James embarked on a solo tour with the first of two shows at Royale Boston. Among the highlights of the opening night was a special tribute to Leonard Cohen through a performance of one of his beloved songs.

Backed by a band featuring members of opening act Twin Limb, James played each of the songs on his just issued solo album Eternally Even throughout the course of the show. The album’s single “Same Old Lie” opened the evening, followed by fellow LP cut “Hide In Plain Sight.” Next came “Know Til Now” and “Dear One,” two of the five songs from James’ 2013 debut solo record Regions Of Light And Sound Of God performed Tuesday night.

The encore began with James offering an a capella cover of “Bird On A Wire” which was written by Leonard Cohen who passed away last week. The show concluded with the Monsters Of Folk original “Dear God (Sincerely M.O.F.),” the Eternally Even track “In The Moment,” a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Set Free” and a rendition of The Basement Tapes’ “Down On The Bottom.”

Today, Jim James is participating in a Reddit Ask Me Anything session. Follow this link for Jim’s AMA starting at 7:00 p.m. ET.
