Jerry Garcia Prom Photos Surface

A series of eight photos purportedly from 1959 or 1960 that show a teenaged Jerry Garcia surfaced on the internet today. The images include Jerry’s prom photos and what is thought to be the earliest photo of Garcia playing an electric guitar.

John Simpson of a Facebook group for Deadheads called I Love The Grateful Dead! shared the photos with the note, “Jerry Garcia’s Prom Pics! You heard it right. I came across these pics on my phone and thought I’d share. A friend whose father was close childhood friends with Jerry had these personal pics. They’ve never been shared publically to my knowledge. But I received a copy and a ‘feel free to share.’ Enjoy!”

Eric Schwartz of the radio program Lone Star Dead, which airs on KNON each Friday between 8 and 10 p.m. CT, tweaked the washed-out originals successfully and shared them publicly on Facebook. Check out a teenaged, pre-folkie Jerry Garcia:
