Stream Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders Covering Stevie Wonder On ‘GarciaLive Vol. 15’

An instrumental cover of Stevie Wonder’s song “I Was Made To Love Her” from GarciaLive Vol. 15: Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, May 21st, 1971 is available to stream. The full Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders archival live release is due out on Round Records this Friday, December 4.

In the early-1970s, Grateful-dead guitarist Jerry Garcia regularly performed with keyboardist Merl Saunders at the San Francisco club Keystone Korner. Drummer Bill Vitt was often behind the kit, as he was on May 21, 1971. Usual bassist John Kahn was absent that night but saxophonist Martin Fierro (who would later join Garcia and Saunders in Legion Of Mary) was there to perform with the ensemble.

Among the songs played by the Garcia/Saunders/Vitt/Fierro lineup that evening was their nine-minute, instrumental arrangement of Steve Wonder’s 1967 hit single, “I Was Made To Love Her,” which can be streamed below:
