Jerry Garcia Band closed out their Halloween concert in 1992 with a rousing cover of the Warren Zevon classic “Werewolves Of London.” Audio of the performance has been shared ahead of GarciaLive Volume 19 arriving this Friday, October 28 featuring the group’s full show held on October 31, 1992 at Oakland Coliseum Arena in Oakland, California.
GarciaLive Volume 19 features the classic Jerry Garcia Band lineup in which the Grateful Dead guitarist was backed by drummer David Kemper, bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Melvin Seals and backing vocalists Jacklyn LaBranch and Gloria Jones. JGB’s Halloween 1992 performance saw Jerry return to the stage for the first time since suffering significant health issues three months earlier.
The latest installment of the GarciaLive live archival audio series was mastered from John Cutler’s original soundboard tapes. While “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox” from the show previously appeared on the Shining Star live album issued in 2001 and he evening’s “Tangled Up In Blue” is featured on the Garcia Plays Dylan collection, the rest of the concert had never been released.
Originally issued by Zevon in January 1978 on his Excitable Boy LP, the Grateful Dead debuted a cover of “Werewolves Of London” just three months later on April 19, 1978. However, after nine performances in 1978 “Werewolves” was shelved by the Dead until their Halloween 1985 concert. Garcia played the song eight additional times on the eight Halloweens that followed. The show-closing take on October 31, 1992 was the Jerry Garcia Band’s penultimate “Werewolves Of London” cover.
