On Tuesday, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit took the day off from their West Coast tour to swing by Jimmy Kimmel Live. The singer-songwriter and his band delivered an electrifying performance of “Crimson and Clay,” a song featured on Isbell’s 2025 solo album, Foxes In The Snow.
The 11-track collection marked Isbell’s first-ever solo acoustic album and first solo LP in any form since 2015’s Something More Than Free. Jason Isbell co-produced Foxes In The Snow with Gina Johnson. Isbell recorded the album using his 1940 Martin guitar during sessions held over five days at New York City’s famed Electric Lady Studios.
“Crimson and Clay” has been performed by Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit over 50 times since the band first played it at their first show of 2025 last April. The ensemble transformed the stark autobiographical song into a smoldering rocker with Sadler Vaden on slide guitar and swirling organ from Derry DeBorja.
Foxes In The Snow has been nominated for a 2026 Grammy in the Best Folk Album category. Additionally, “Crimson & Clay” is up for Best American Roots Performance and the title track will compete for Best American Roots Song.
