Japanese Breakfast shared a take on Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.” The cover comes as part of a special Spotify Singles series highlighting artists nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy Award.
The Spotify Singles series featuring BNA-nominated acts sees artists offering reimaginings of their own songs as well, with Japanese Breakfast reinventing their song, “Be Sweet,” “funking it up with a disco beat and call-and-response vocals,” as per press materials for the single. “Be Sweet” originally appears on Japanese Breakfast’s 2021 album, Jubilee, which is also nominated for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy at the 64th annual awards airing on Sunday.

The Grammy-centric Spotify Singles series also boasts artists covering previous BNA nominees. Japanese Breakfast frontwoman Michelle Zauner detailed their choice of “Skinny Love” by labelmates and 2012 BNA winners Bon Iver.
“We decided to record Bon Iver’s ‘Skinny Love’ because it felt like a very surprising cover for Japanese Breakfast,” Zauner said. “It’s so moving and sparse. We felt we could add some interesting instrumentation to the track and celebrate our fellow label mate Bon Iver.”
