The first tour featuring the classic Jane’s Addiction lineup in 14 years came to an early and unfortunate end when frontman Perry Farrell fought guitarist Dave Navarro on Friday night in Boston. Today, the band — Farrell, Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins — officially canceled all remaining 2024 tour dates.

“The band have made the difficult decision to take some time away as a group,” reads a note from Jane’s Addiction addressed to fans. “As such they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour.” Fans will receive refunds automatically via primary ticketing platforms. Those who purchased tickets through secondary sources should reach out to point of purchase.

Navarro, Avery and Perkins issued a joint statement of their own on Instagram laying the blame squarely on Perry Farrell. “Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” they wrote.

“Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs,” the three continued. “We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.”

Through a representative, Farrell responded to the tour’s cancelation in statement shared with Variety:

“This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

All was not well in Jane’s Addiction land leading into Friday’s show at Leader Bank Pavilion. Farrell struggled to make it through the quartet’s Tuesday, September 10 concert in New York City. At one point, he alerted the crowd, “Something’s wrong with my voice,” and nearly ended the performance early. While Perry Farrell and Jane's Addiction rebounded to close the NYC run on a high note one night later, Navarro looked angry throughout Wednesday’s show.

Fast forward to Friday, and tensions were mounting late in the night, according to multiple fan reports, as Jane’s Addiction performed “Mountain Song.” Farrell was off-pitch and scowled at Navarro as the guitarist took his solo. Then, the band turned in an abbreviated “Three Days” before all hell broke loose during the ensuing “Ocean Size.”

Perry Farrell approached Dave Navarro and started screaming at him. Navarro put his hand up to hold back the singer but eventually Farrell took a shot at the guitarist. Multiple crew members emerged and Avery came over to subdue Farrell. The show was stopped and Jane’s Addiction sans Perry Farrell returned to take a bow.

Farrell’s wife, Etta Lau Farrell, issued a statement on Instagram the following morning defending her husband. Etta acknowledged “there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members.” She claimed Perry was enraged by the “extremely loud” stage volume and felt “his voice was being drowned out by the band.”

Etta Lau Farrell laid out her “first person account” and accused Eric Avery of putting Perry in a headlock and punching him three times. “Perry was a crazed beast for the next half an hour – he finally did not calm down, but did breakdown and cried and cried,” Etta said of the scuffle’s aftermath. “Eric, well he either didn’t understand what descalation meant or took advantage of the situation and got in a few cheap shots on Perry.”

Eric Avery returned to Jane’s Addiction back in May after leaving the band in 2010. The OG lineup began their co-headlining tour with Love and Rockets on August 9. The tour was supposed to continue through October 16.

Jane’s Addiction previously called off a Sunday night show slated for Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport, Connecticut. While the group didn’t address the remainder of the tour at the time, they apologized to fans “for the events that unfolded” on Friday night.
