Musicians incorporating seasonal songs into their setlists is a common occurrence during the holidays. Acts that thrive in the jam scene are often adding carols and traditional (and not so traditional) Christmas tunes to their setlists around this time of year. This Christmas Eve edition of Sunday Cinema gathers video footage of many such occasions when jam friendly musicians got into the holiday spirit.
The videos begin with Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Joe Craven and Jim Kerwin performing “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” from December 1991. Next comes moe. playing “Carol Of The Bells” in December 2016. After that is “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” by the Disco Biscuits from December 2012. There’s also video of The Del McCoury Band’s renditions of “Blue Christmas” and “Christmas Time’s Comin'” from December 2010.
A performance of “Christmas Time” by ALO can be seen in footage from December 2006 and the notorious “Dick In A Box” cover showcased by Umphrey’s McGee from that same month is also presented. Finally, though it came in the middle of this past summer and not during the holidays, check out Phish’s offering of “O Holy Night” from the Baker’s Dozen run at Madison Square Garden.
