Oscar-winning actor Jamie Foxx will executive produce a project based on the life of the late great soul singer Marvin Gaye. The renowned vocalist’s son Marvin Gaye III is also an executive producer on the limited series.

“I’ve been a huge fan my whole life,” Foxx told Billboard. “His brilliance in music [is] unparalleled. Marvin Gaye’s story has always fascinated me.”

Foxx is working with Suzanne de Passe and Madison Jones of Passe Jones Entertainment for distribution of the Gaye limited series. Though several other attempts have been made to tell Marvin Gaye’s life story, the Foxx led project is the first to have the support of the surviving members of Gaye’s family.

“This project will be a powerful and definitive telling of Marvin Gaye’s life story,” said Gaye III.

A Motown legend during his successful career, the iconic soul label’s founder Berry Gordy is also supporting Foxx’s project. In 1984 Marvin Gaye was murdered by his father at home in Los Angeles. The man behind such classics as “What’s Going On” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” was just 44 years old.
