James Brown Guests With Dave Matthews Band In 2002
By Scott Bernstein Dec 21, 2015 • 11:10 am PST
One of the more exciting collaborations in Dave Matthews Band history took place on this date in 2002. DMB was joined by legendary performer James Brown and members of his Soul Generals band for “Get Up (I Feel Like A Sex Machine)” on December 21, 2002 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The electric guest spot came at the end of DMB’s main set at the second of two sold- out MSG performances. Members of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe had already sat- in with the group earlier in the evening. When the Godfather Of Soul came out, the crowd went absolutely wild. Brown exchanged dance moves with Matthews as he led the group through one of his trademark songs. Sadly, James Brown passed away a few years later on Christmas Day in 2006.
