Jack White Sees Red: Writes Scathing Letter To Elon Musk Denouncing Twitter

“That is officially an asshole move.”

Jack White posted an open letter ripping into Elon Musk and denouncing the Tesla CEO’s recent acquisition of Twitter, which led to the reinstatement of the account of former President Donald Trump on the social media platform. White wrote that in response, he deactivated the Twitter account of his label Third Man Records.

White has previously been a supporter of Tesla and Musk. White posed for a picture with Musk in 2016, captioning a post on Instagram with White calling Musk “the Henry Ford of the 21st century.” In 2019, White posted a video clip of a recording session for his band The Raconteurs that featured his Tesla car stereo being used for playback.

Musk, who recently acquired Twitter, held a poll on the platform asking if Trump’s account should be reinstated. Trump’s account had been indefinitely suspended following his use of Twitter surrounding the insurrection attempt on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021. After the poll ended, Musk reinstated Trump’s Twitter account.

“So you gave [T]rump his [T]witter platform back,” White wrote on Instagram. “Absolutely disgusting, Elon. That is officially an asshole move.”

White then went on distance himself from Musk despite his past support for Tesla. White also shared his reasoning behind deactivating the Third Man Records Twitter account, writing:

I’ve never had a personal Twitter account thankfully (it’s mostly a sea of negativity if you ask me), but I will now be deactivating my record label Third Man Records account from Twitter. It’s a shame that our label’s artists will lose a social media outlet to promote their art, and I apologize to our artists for having to do this, but we are not going to even tangentially support you or this platform that will help conspiracy spreading liars and out of touch narci-capitalists tear this country apart, all for Trump’s ego and your tax break agenda. (We’ll also be taking a look at other platforms as well and decide about them accordingly, but this first. It’s not easy when wanting the best for other artists.)
