J.R.C.G., the project of Tacoma-based drummer Justin R. Cruz Gallego, made the short trip to Seattle in July to deliver a Live on KEXP session. Gallego and the band offered songs from J.R.C.G’s 2024 album, Grim Iconic…(Sadistic Mantra).

Grim Iconic arrived on August 2 via renowned Seattle-based label, Sub Pop. The new record follows Gallego and company’s 2021 LP Ajo Sunshine.

Gallego detailed Grim Iconic:

“I see this record as first and foremost a musical statement. I grew up in punk and DIY subcultures, but before that I had Latin music playing in the background through my childhood and every phase of adolescence. It was surprisingly natural to incorporate. I realized I wanted to go deeper into these rhythms. I wanted to make a record that felt as experimental as much as it felt from the perspective of a Latino. When I got a glimmer of that possibility, it felt exciting.”

J.R.C.G. — Gallego, Morgan Henderson, Jason Clackley, Alex Barr, Anthony Beauchemin and Ian Corrigan — kicked off their Live on KEXP session with Grim Iconic’s opening sequence of the title track and “34.” Next, the band delivered the album’s “Dogear” and deep cut “Cholla Beat.” J.R.C.G. wrapped the session with Grim Iconic closer “World i.”
