‘Inside Out With Turner & Seth’ Podcast Kicks Off 5th Anniversary Celebration

In March of 2016, co-hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner launched Inside Out with Turner & Seth, a podcast focusing on live music. Today, Inside Out with Turner & Seth — one of the earliest additions to JamBase partner the Osiris Media Network — begins a celebration of the podcast’s fifth anniversary by sharing the first installment of a two-part special.

Turner and Seth have interviewed a wide range and illustrious batch of musicians for Inside Out wTnS over the past five years starting with Col. Bruce Hampton. So, it’s only fitting a clip from one of the pair’s interviews with the late, great Colonel gets the special underway. “wTnS 5th Anniversary Special (Part 1 of 2)” also features clips from Michael League, Karl Denson, Jeff Coffin, Jon Fishman and Billy Strings‘ appearances on the podcast.

Rob and Seth recorded new commentary for the special to connect the segments they feel are “most indicative of this podcast’s spirit.” The co-hosts note Hampton is the show’s “godfather” and that the show wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the Colonel. Snarky Puppy’s Michael League is featured next and spoke about longtime collaborator David Crosby. Then, Karl Denson recalled the influence of Bobby Keys on his saxophone playing and shared stories of rehearsing and performing with The Rolling Stones.

“wTnS 5th Anniversary Special (Part 1 of 2)” continues with Jeff Coffin of Dave Matthews Band & Flecktones fame. Coffin detailed an awkward moment that took place during “Ants Marching” at the first DMB concert after the departure of Boyd Tinsley. A highlight of Inside Out with Turner & Seth was the podcast’s coverage of Hampton 70, an all-star concert celebrating the Colonel in which the famed musician passed away at the end of the show. Rob and Seth included clips from their interview with Phish drummer Jon Fishman recorded at Hampton 70 in part one of the fifth anniversary special. Fish discussed learning Phish’s intricate compositions upon the band’s return from a five-year breakup, the quartet’s knack for non-verbal communication and more.

Turner and Weiner conclude the first part of the special with one of the best younger musicians in the scene, guitarist Billy Strings. In the first of two clips from Strings’ 2018 appearance on Inside Out with Turner & Seth, Billy discussed the role his father played in his musical education and early picking sessions. The episode concludes with Strings talking about how grateful he is for the opportunities that he’s had and getting to form relationships with musicians he’s looked up to since he was a child as well as a performance of “Memories Of You.”
