Japanese folk artist Ichiko Aoba (青葉市子) came to KEXP studios in Seattle earlier this year to capture a Live on KEXP session. The guitarist and singer-songwriter offered a career-spanning collection of songs for the listener supported radio station.
Ichiko Aoba stopped by KEXP on April 22 following a show in Seattle on the North American leg of her Luminescent Creatures World Tour. The singer-songwriter released Luminescent Creatures on February 28 via Sylvan Esso‘s imprint Psychic Hotline.

Ichiko began her Live on KEXP session with “Fuwarin,” the opening track on her 2010 debut album, Kamisori Otome. The guitarist then turned to 2018’s q p, performing “Faint Song Of The Rabbit Moon.”
Aoba then offered a song by her mentor, Anmi Yamada, “Inochi no Katawarani,” before dialing up a dreamy electric piano sound on her keyboard for “pirsomnia,” from Luminescent Creatures. Ichiko returned to the guitar to wrap the session with the playful “Sayonara Penguin” from her 2013 LP, 0.
