Howlin Rain Announce Live Album Series & Summer Tour 2019

Howlin Rain announced a new series of live albums titled Under The Wheels. To preview the first volume of the collection, the blues-rock act has released its first single “Goodbye Ruby.” The San Francisco band has also detailed a number of dates for their Summer Tour 2019.

Under The Wheels compiles songs from Howlin’ Rain’s multi-track live records on the road, offering “a no-rules, anything goes portrait of the band.” The first volume of the live series, Under The Wheels: Live From The Coasts (Volume 1) is set for release on August 30 via founding member Ethan Miller’s own Silver Current Records. It marks the first in a two-part collection highlighting takes from their East and West Coasts runs across 2018 and 2019. Emphasizing the band’s improvisational abilities, the first volume will be followed up with its companion live record in the fall.

The first volume features five tracks, including a sprawling 10-minute take on “To The Wind” and energetic “Death Prayer In Heaven’s Orchard.” In addition to tracks off 2018’s The Alligator Bride, “Missouri” and a 13-minute “Coming Down,” the album also sports a psychedelic rendition of “Goodbye Ruby,” which has been released as the collection’s first single.

Explained Miller in a statement:

No matter how accomplished a studio album a band makes there is still something even more elevated and relatable about a live performance captured well. The audience and musicians engaged in an ecstatic, emotional dance together, the sound of light-speed group creativity under heavy pressure, feats of improvised melody and feel beyond expectation and of course the raw edges, rough corners and deeply human sound of artists completely exposed in the high temp firing and fusing of their hopes, risks, vulnerabilities and ultimately triumphs of imperfection and musical joyrides beyond conscious imagination. … That’s my favorite place for Howlin Rain to be and my intention with the live series is to open a spigot between the fans and these captured live adventures and to leave it open as an ongoing conversation about our spiritual dance together.

The record will be available via limited-edition and deluxe/special-edition vinyl packages, as well as limited-edition cassette and digital formats. Furthermore, Howlin Rain has added a number of new shows, including eight dates in California as well as a one-off show with Ryley Walker at New York City’s Brooklyn Bowl.
