Holly Bowling Kicks Off ‘Wilderness Sessions’ Series In Lake Tahoe

Holly Bowling got her Wilderness Sessions underway from Lake Tahoe on Friday. The series sees the pianist performing in picturesque locales around the country.
Holly began by performing — to an audience of one furry friend — a jazzy rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Lost Sailor,” gorgeously framed by sailboats upon the lake. Bowling then utilized some of her effects at hand and then trickled into a jubilant rendition of Phish’s “Piper.” But it didn’t take long for the pianist to get into some more low key, darker improvisation, which featured some percussive effects and Holly on the hammer dulcimer, before heading back into strains of “Piper” as well as a “Lost Sailor” tease.

Bowling then dropped into “Saint Of Circumstance,” completing the common Dead pairing of “Lost Sailor > “Saint Of Circumstance.” Holly would close out the show with Phish’s “Squirming Coil,” which contained a call back to “Piper” (the transition between “Lost Sailor” and “Piper” sounded as if it had a quick “Coil” foreshadowing as well).
