Holly Bowling Analyzes Phish’s ‘It’s Ice’ & Announces Colorado Shows
By Andy Kahn Jul 25, 2016 • 10:18 am PDT
Holly Bowling frequently interprets the music of veteran rock band Phish for solo piano. Standout versions of “The Wedge” and “Twist” and the famed Tahoe “Tweezer” are just a few of the songs she’s arranged and performed on piano. Bowling also recently took on Phish’s “It’s Ice” and she’s shared a video analyzing the classic track from the band’s 1992 album Rift.
Dubbed “Music Nerdery, Vol. 1,” this apparent first installment in a series of videos examined one of the sections of “It’s Ice” that proved most challenging to nail down. In a note posted with the clip, Bowling stated, “Here’s a look at one of the sections of ‘It’s Ice’ that I found most difficult to learn – not because the notes were that difficult technically, but because the pattern behind the notes was not obvious at first.”
Take a deep dive into “It’s Ice” with Holly in the video below:
A vinyl edition of Bowling’s note-for-note re-creations of Phish’s versions of “The Wedge” from their July 20, 2014 show in Chicago and “Twist” from their October 23, 2013 show in Glens Falls was recently released. Order a copy of the record here.
Bowling will also be in Colorado Labor Day Weekend during which she’ll play four concerts. On August 31 Holly will play a full solo show in Boulder at Owsley’s Golden Road and on September 1 she’ll be in Denver opening for Pink Talking Fish and John Kadlecik at Dulcinea’s 100th Monkey. Then on September 2 and 3 Bowling will host afternoon Phish Dick’s Pre-parties at Quixote’s True Blue in Denver.
