The second annual edition of the Blue Ox Music Festival concluded at Whispering Pines Campground in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with Saturday’s temperature breaking 90 degrees for the third straight day of the hot festival weekend. Hosts Pert Near Sandstone’s set again featured accompaniment from animal-costumed dancers as well as guitarist Jay Lenz’s masked father Jim Lenz joining in the festivities. A legendary pair of longtime collaborators, The Del McCoury Band once again teamed with The Preservation Hall Jazz Band for an eclectic set that mixed a variety of styles and genres. Recently reunited headliners Bela Fleck And The Flecktones offered a career-spanning set before Railroad Earth played a closing set delivering such favorites as “Dandelion Wine,” “Mighty River” and “Hard Livin'” as well as the relatively new “Farewell To Isinglass” and others.
Later on, Thursday performers Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and Pert Near Sandstone shared a set on the late night stage that featured guests such as Flecktones Bela Fleck and Victor Wooten and Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone and Andy Goessling. The final day of Blue Ox also saw appearances by Sierra Hull, Jeff Austin Band, Nikki Lane, Shovels & Rope and others.
