HBO To Air ‘David Bowie: The Last Five Years’ Documentary

HBO has acquired the rights to the documentary film David Bowie: The Last Five Years. The examination of the late legendary musician David Bowie which was premiered on the BBC last month .

HBO did not disclose when David Bowie: The Last Five Years would make its American television premiere. The documentary was produced and directed by Francis Whately, and is a companion to his 2013 film David Bowie: Five Years. The new movie focusses on Bowie’s final two albums, The Next Day and Blackstar and his play Lazarus.

“Looking at Bowie’s extraordinary creativity during the last five years of his life has allowed me to reexamine his life’s work and move beyond the simplistic view that his career was simply predicated on change,” Whately said in a statement. “HBO, whose global output the world admires, is a great channel to get this incredible documentary out to the U.S. fans.”

Interviews with Bowie, longtime collaborator Tony Visconti and others are featured in David Bowie: The Last Five Years which also includes “archival footage, audio from the recording sessions for The Next Day and Blackstar, and unprecedented access to Bowie’s closest friends and artistic collaborators.”
