Happy Birthday Van Morrison: Performing Live At Winterland In 1974

By Andy Kahn Aug 31, 2018 9:20 am PDT

Renowned vocalist Van Morrison celebrates his 73rd birthday today. Morrison was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and began his career in the early-1960s fronting the Belfast-based garage rock group Them. By 1966, Morrison’s solo efforts were taking shape and in the subsequent decades, he forged a wildly successful and critically acclaimed career behind his distinctive voice and songwriting.

The week’s edition of Full Show Friday revisits a Van Morrison concert at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco in 1974. Morrison plays guitar and handles lead vocals while supported by bassist David Hayes, drummer David Shaw, keyboardist Jeff Labes, keyboardist/saxophonist Jack Schroer, guitarist Ralph Walsh, harmonica player James Trumball and backing vocalists Dorothy Morrison and Bill Combes.

The setlist that evening included the Them hits “Here Comes The Night” and “Gloria,” as well as covers of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like A Woman” and Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You.” Those were played alongside such now-classic Morrison favorites as “Into The Mystic,” “Moondance,” “Caravan” and several others. The show closed with a sprawling, 10-minute version of “Cypress Avenue.” Watch the full concert via the Music Vault below:
