Happy Birthday Ringo Starr: Playing The Greek With His All-Starr Band In 1989

Richard Starkey was born in Liverpool, England on this date in 1940. The man better known as Ringo Starr would replace Pete Best as drummer in The Beatles in 1962 and go on to reach worldwide popularity and acclaim as one of the Fab Four. For Ringo’s 76th birthday today, here’s a look back at the original lineup of his post-Beatles project dubbed Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band.

Featuring what would become an evolving lineup of talented musicians, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band first appeared in 1989. Over the subsequent years Ringo enlisted such heavy hitters as Peter Frampton, John Entwistle, Jack Bruce, Dave Edmunds, Todd Rundgren, Randy Bachman, Ian Hunter, Sheila E., Greg Lake, Richard Marx, Edgar Winter, Billy Squier, Steve Lukather, Gregg Rolie and many others to join him in various iterations of the All-Starr Band.

Truly living up to its “all-star” billing, the original band lineup featured Ringo’s brother-in-law Joe Walsh on guitar along with Nils Lofgren, keyboardist and “Fifth Beatle” Billy Preston, acclaimed pianist Dr. John, The Band members Levon Helm on drums, Rick Danko on bass and Garth Hudson on accordion, famed session player Jim Keltner and Zak Starkey on drums and the Big Man Clarence Clemons adding saxophone. On their first tour, the supergroup held a pair of shows at the historic Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on September 3 and 4, 1989.

Below is a pro-shot video compiling highlights from that run at the Greek, with performances of The Band’s “The Weight,” “The Shape I’m In” and “Up On Cripple Creek,” the Dr. John-led “Iko Iko” and “Right, Place Wrong Time,” Preston’s “Will It Go Round In Circles,” Walsh-leading the Eagles’ “Life In The Fast Lane” and his “Rocky Mountain Way” and more. The ensemble also tackled hits by The Beatles including “Yellow Submarine,” “I Wanna Be Your Man” and “With A Little Help From My Friends” as well as Ringo originals “It Don’t Come Easy” and “Photograph.”
