Happy Birthday Neil Peart: ‘Der Trommler’ Drum Solo

Veteran member of Canadian prog rock trio Rush, drummer Neil Peart today celebrates his 64th birthday. Though recent reports indicate the acclaimed performer is at least retired from the live stage, hopes of Peart joining bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson again in some capacity are strong among the band’s legion of loyal fans.
Last year Rush completed the R40 North American Tour and haven’t taken the stage together since. The 40th anniversary tour was likely “their last major tour of this magnitude,” and culminated with a final performance at The Forum near Los Angeles on August 1, 2015.
A decade earlier Rush embarked on the R30 30th Anniversary World Tour that included a stop at The Festhalle in Frankfurt, Germany on September 24, 2004. Peart took the spotlight during a drum solo dubbed “Der Trommler” which can be seen in the video below. The footage shows off Peart’s incredible kit, which includes the ability to trigger samples and eventually syncs with video behind the stage. Watch here:
