Happy Birthday Keller Williams: Fronting The Rhythm Devils

By Andy Kahn Feb 4, 2016 10:48 am PST

Eclectically talented musician Keller Williams celebrates his 46th birthday today. The Fredericksburg, Virginia native has been a staple on the jam scene since the early 1990s and continues to keep busy with solo work as well as the many various groups with which he’s affiliated. Keller with More Than A Little, Grateful Grass, Keller & The Keels, Grateful Gospel, The Keller Williams Kwahtro, WMDs and Keller With The Travelin’ McCourys are some of the many musical endeavors currently keeping KDub active.

Another project Keller was brought in to augment was when he joined Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart in their Rhythm Devils ensemble. In 2010 the Rhythm Devils assembled for a set at Gathering Vibes featuring Kreutzmann, Hart, Williams and Davy Knowles on guitar, Andy Hess on bass and Sikiru Adepoju on percussion. A year later, the Rhythm Devils with Kreutzmann, Hart, Williams, guitarist Steve Kimock and bassist Reed Mathis returned to The Vibes for the lone performance showcasing that lineup.

For Keller’s birthday today, below is a Throwback Thursday look back at him in the band leader role fronting the Rhythm Devils at GOTV in 2010 and again in 2011. First up is official footage of Hart’s “Fire On The Mountain” from 2010 followed by a lengthy “Eyes of the World” > “Franklin’s Tower” sequence from 2011, watch:
