Declan MacManus was born on this date in 1954 in London, England. Better known as acclaimed singer-songwriter Elvis Costello, he rose to fame as part of his hometown’s pub rock movement in the 1970s, eventually entering the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with his band The Attractions in 2003. For Elvis’ 62nd birthday today, here’s a Throwback Thursday look a jam session held in 1989 at Sweetwater in Mill Valley, California featuring Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia.
On April 24, 1989 a show billed Elvis Costello & Friends was held at Sweetwater featuring a solo performance by Costello, followed by a set of music that at various times featured Bob Weir, Pete Sears, Sammy Hagar, Nick Lowe, Commander Cody and others – including Jerry. The Grateful Dead lead guitarist emerged for the concluding portion of the jam session that saw takes on “You Win Again,” The Bottle Let Me Down,” Why Don’t You Love Me,” “Riot In Cellblock #9,” “Going Down,” “C.C. Rider,” “Turn On Your Lovelight,” “Let The Good Times Roll” and “Lovable.”
Video of parts of Jerry joining Elvis can be seen in the below footage posted by essephreak.
