Happy Birthday Derek Trucks: 2014 Bonnaroo SuperJam
By Scott Bernstein Jun 8, 2017 • 12:28 pm PDT
Famed guitarist Derek Trucks was born in Jacksonville, Florida on this date in 1979. The now 38-year-old axeman is the rare artist who has been part of two critically-acclaimed and commercially successful bands as he was a member of the Allman Brothers Band for 15 years and formed the beloved Tedeschi Trucks Band with his wife Susan Tedeschi. Along the way he also fronted the Derek Trucks Band and toured the world with Eric Clapton, among other highlights from an impressive resume that continues to grow.
In 2014 Derek Trucks was recruited by Bonnaroo organizers to lead the event’s traditional Saturday night SuperJam. Derek fronted an impressive house hand that included Tedeschi, Willie Weeks, James Gadson, Adem Deitch, David Hidalgo, Eric Krasno, Nigel Hall, The Shady Horns and members of his own band for the 19-song performance. Taj Mahal, Anthony Hamilton, Ben Folds and Chaka Khan were among the guests who contributed to the 2014 SuperJam.
Trucks put together a stellar batch of tunes for the evening such as Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain,” Otis Redding’s “I Can’t Turn You Loose,” Sly & The Family Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song” > “I Want To Take You Higher” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder. Derek & Co. delivered one highlight after another on what stands among the best SuperJams in Bonnaroo history.
